Guest Post: Sprout Shares Her Story about the Book KA-BOOM!

When Alyce Joy decided to put me in her books, I was really excited. Sometimes things happen to me that I don’t plan, such as blowing up Taylor’s dollhouse. My mission would have been so much easier if that hadn’t happened.

A headache was roaring between my ears, while I was trying to convince her into believing I wasn’t just a dirty, fibbin’ fairy. I knew I was in trouble though, when she grabbed the flyswatter. I managed to think my way through this bad situation and we finally got on the right track.

When I did get through to Taylor, I found her to be a very sweet child. She came to realize, I could be a pretty neat friend. She wanted to hop lily pads in her daddy’s big pond, like the frogs do. The giant swallowtail butterfly flew her to the pond, landing on a green rock. We had to be quiet so we wouldn’t be critter bait. She was only four inches tall, like me.

We were looking for Sir Leapsalot, the bullfrog. On the way, we met Snilly Snail. She was hurrying to get away from the Brattz brothers, Loozer and Doozer. We followed her to Miss Chipsie’s Chambers. The tunnel to her chambers was a fright for Taylor, but we made it okay.

We thought we would be safe there, until the Brattz boys decided to dig us up. I knew then, it was time for me to take action. I sent for my friends, the bees, who wear yellow jackets. They took care of the situation and we were off again looking for Sir Leapsalot. Everything looked good. Then we had to take shelter from Tatterhead, the pileated woodpecker. We got ourselves into a bit of a dizzying spell, until I had to take matters into hand.

We found Sir Leapsalot at the big pond and Taylor had a ball hopping lily pads on his back, except when they decided to come ashore. A huge fish hawk decided he wanted frog legs for dinner. I tried to reach my right foot with my left wing, but it was caught on a thistle and I couldn’t move. Miss Chipsie set me free, so I could foil the hawk.

We said goodbye, for it was time to go. Taylor was snug in her butterfly seat, a monster snake hissed, she screamed, I made fog and we flew up in the sky towards Taylor’s home.  Sigh.

Guest Post: Why Children Should Read—A Lot!

Why Children Should Read—A Lot!
by Maggie Lyons

How important is it for a child to read well? Some states predict their prison populations based on the number of students failing fourth-grade reading tests. (This fact was presented at a Congressional hearing by Dr. Reid Lyon of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.) According to the ProLiteracy organization, 63 percent of prison inmates can’t read. Prison is perhaps the direst of the numerous consequences of illiteracy.

Here are a few more surprising facts published by the ProLiteracy organization:

In the United States, 29 percent (63 million) of the population over the age of sixteen can’t read well enough to understand a newspaper article written at eighth-grade level.

An additional 30 million adults (14 percent of all US adults) only read at the fifth-grade level or lower.

Seventy-seven million Americans have only a two-in-three chance of correctly reading—and therefore understanding—the label on their prescription medicine.

Illiteracy costs the US government between $106 and $236 billion each year.

These are just a few of the social consequences of poor reading skills in the United States.

Learning to read proficiently takes a lot of effort. Sally Shaywitz of Yale Medical School once observed that “reading is the most complex of human functions.” But the rewards for grasping the skill of reading proficiently make that effort worthwhile. A study by American researchers Cunningham and Stanovich found that, not surprisingly, the more children read, the more they expand their vocabulary, improve their spelling skill, and increase their verbal fluency and general knowledge. And common sense suggests that reading proficiency improves writing skill too.

But the benefits don’t stop there. A British project, Every Child a Reader, has found, among other things, that children who learn to read well enjoy learning. Their social interaction with adults and classmates improves and their self-confidence is boosted.

The key to improved academic achievement lies in the amount of reading a child does. Just adding an extra ten minutes per day can dramatically increase children’s exposure to words and, by extension, improve their ability to comprehend what they read. For example, according to researchers Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding (article in Reading Research Quarterly, vol. 23) students who read for only 1.8 minutes per day, read 106,000 words a year. If those students were to increase their reading to around eleven minutes per day, they would read almost 700,000 words per year, an increase of a whopping 556 percent.

Studies indicate that the most productive reading in terms of academic achievement comes from voluntary, independent reading—that is, reading outside school. Children who enjoy reading so much that they happily read outside school are the ones most likely to develop significant cognitive skills—and most probably social skills—the fastest. This is where adults can have an enormous influence. Encouraging children to read should be a primary goal for all adults who care about the children in their lives.

Maggie Lyons is a writer and editor who was born in Wales and crossed the pond to Virginia. With no regard for the well-being of her family and neighbors, she trained as a classical pianist. Then came a career of putting rear ends on seats—that is, orchestral management, marked by reams of marketing and fundraising writing and program note scribbling for audiences, many of whose first priority was to find their names in the donors’ lists. Editing for academic publishers also brought plenty of satisfaction—she admits she has a fondness for nerds—but nothing like the magic she discovered in writing fiction and nonfiction for children. Several of her articles, poetry, and a chapter book miraculously appeared in Stories for Children Magazine and knowonder! magazine. She hopes her stories encourage reluctant young readers to turn a page or two.

Her middle-grade adventure story Vin and the Dorky Duet is available as an e-book at MuseItUp Publishing’s bookstore (MuseItYoung section), on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008AK7ALE, and as a paperback at Halo Publishing International at http://halopublishing.com/bookstore/Maggie-Lyons. Dewi and the Seeds of Doom, a middle-grade adventure story, will be released as an e-book by MuseItUp Publishing in October. Halo Publishing International will release the paperback.

The World of Ink Network will be touring author Maggie Lyons’s contemporary children’s chapter book, Vin and the Dorky Duet throughout August and September 2012.

Magnetic compost heaps, man-eating bubble baths and other disasters erupt when an inventive seventh-grader meets a challenge to win a David Beckham autographed soccer jersey if he can befriend an unsociable nerd and introduce his sister to the nerd’s hunky brother.

The story is about the disasters that pile up when a seventh-grader’s brilliant plan to meet his sister’s challenge takes more than one wrong turn. Life tosses challenges at all of us. It would be incredibly boring if it didn’t. What matters is what we learn from them.

About the Book:
A twelve-year-old boy named Vin, goes on a mission—reluctantly. He doesn’t share the optimism of the knights of old who embarked on impossible missions without a doubt they’d succeed. When magnetic compost heaps, man-eating bubble baths and other disasters erupt, Vin comes close to packing in the whole ridiculous business. He calls it Operation BS, his code name for a mission to introduce his sister to a boy she has a crush on. He doesn’t want to play matchmaker, but Meg’s promise to reward him with a David Beckham autographed soccer jersey is a decisive incentive.

What are readers saying about Night Buddies by Sands Hetherington?

Have you heard about the after lights-out adventure story delighting young readers and middle graders who relish roller coaster fantasy and fun?

This adventured filled chapter book series for kids with unforgettable characters and an astonishing and inventive collection of magical whatchamacallits is called Night Buddies and the first book, Night Buddies and the Pineapple Cheesecake Scare is out on a program with the World of Ink Network virtual tours.

Kids everywhere are embarking on adventures chasing down enemies and cleaning up one mess after another as they solve the earthshaking mysteries with John and his red crocodile Night Buddy Crosley.

A Little about Night Buddies and the Pineapple Cheesecake Scare:
Who stole all the pineapple cheesecakes from the only factory in the world that makes them? A young boy named John, who is not ready to go to sleep, and his friend, a bright red crocodile named Crosley who turns up under John’s bed are about to find out. Sneaking out of John’s house using Crosley’s “I-ain’t-here-doodad” which makes them invisible to John’s parents, the investigation starts out fine but things get a little crazy when Crosley, who is allergic to water, gets wet.  Hilarious things happen when Crosley’s allergy to water kicks in, and when they get to the pineapple cheesecake factory and meet Big Foot Mae, the investigation gets more complicated and zany than either of them bargained for.

But don't take our word for it. Here is what some of the readers are saying:
School kids (2nd, 3rd, 4th graders) have written to Sands after he's read Night Buddies to them.

All the letters start with Dear Mr. Hetherington or Dear Sands Hetherington:

"I liked your story a lot. I also like the way you came up with the I-ain't-here-doodad. When it is published, I will buy it no matter what!" ~ Your friend, Damian

"Thank you for reading Night Buddies. I liked it when Crosley drools on the floor. I nearly freaked out when you did Crosley's voice. I hope you write Night Buddies Two. Yerk! Yerk! Yerk!" ~ Jeff
