The  crowdfunding campaign ends in 6 days - June 15th! As of now, we are still short of reaching the goal. If we fall short, we don't get any of the funding & have to start over. If you haven't had a chance to check it out yet, please do! Grenier and Collier hope you are as excited as they are to bring this fun and amazing book to life. We have a few more days to go, so let's hope for more support!

If you have already backed the project, THANK YOU! If you haven't had a chance yet, please try to get to it BEFORE June 15th!

What Is A Buhdeedoo - The Writing Mama Show with Virginia S Grenier

The Writing Mama show is on Mondays and hosted by Mom's Choice and Award-winning Author Virginia S Grenier, who is joined weekly by guest authors to talk about the writing and publishing industry, and their books.

This week on Monday June 9, 2014 our guest is Dorothy Smaniotto, whose son Alex created and illustrated the Buhdeedoo. Alex is a young man with Asperger's Syndrome. He was diagnosed at the age of 6, but has never let that diagnosis slow him down. As Alex puts it, "I embrace my Asperger's rather than look at it as a disability."

Dorothy is the author of her own book called "The Burgundy Journey: Using Hope, Humor & Faith To Conquer Adversity--No Matter What." The book tells the story of her struggles with a rare, incurable autoimmune disease that has caused numerous health issues. It also details how Alex was physically attacked by classroom aides in his previous public school and the emotional scars left with him.

Romance -Special show - Leigh Michaels and Jean Joachim

Special Romance Writers show with Marsha's very special guests Jean Joachim and Leigh Michaels on Tuesday June 9 at 8PM CST 9PM EST. Both of these authors are very successful and extremely helpful to new authors which in itself is a very time consuming job but they both know how difficult this business is.

Leigh Michaels is the author of more than 80 contemporary romance novels published by Harlequin Books and has received Reviewer's Choice awards from Romantic Times. She teaches romance writing at in-person seminars and on the Internet at Gotham Writer's Workshop and at Barnes & Noble University, and has written articles for Writer's Digest, The Writer, and the RWA journal.

Jean Joachim  is a wife and mother of two sons, is owned by a rescued pug, named Homer. She’d been writing non-fiction for what seemed like forever until she got up the nerve to try fiction. She is also doing radio interviews on “The Book Club” with John Austin.

Self Publish Your Children's Book

Launching into the World of Children’s Books

I’ve been an author and involved in the publishing industry for many years. I’m also an avid reader. One of my fondest hopes for my two children was for them to love the world of books as much as I do. Well...one out of two kids, isn’t bad. At least I got 50% participation. Truthfully, I’ve always believed that reading is so important for children, and they need a wide variety of things to read. Not only am I an author, but I’m also a graphic artist. I enjoy working in the publishing industry doing book covers, banners, promotional posters, etc. for authors and publishers.

Recently I was approached by a dear friend and children’s author, Marsha Casper Cook, who asked me if I could format a children’s book for her. Thinking to myself, “How hard could this be?” I immediately grabbed for that brass ring. I viewed it as another chance for me to work on a project that would encourage children to read. I dove in enthusiastically. Designing her cover was more fun than I ever thought it would be. I was challenged to make it bright and colorful as well as something that would attract a child’s attention. After collaborating in many sessions full of laughter and giggling at our ideas, we landed on something we were both happy with.

Next...the inside of the book. I’ve been formatting books for years and heard working with illustrations was difficult, and boy, that’s the truth. I wanted the interior of the book to rival what I’d seen from some larger publishers, and to do that I knew I’d need some complicated software. In a very short period of time, I taught myself how to use Adobe InDesign. What a worthwhile challenge. Working with illustrations is no picnic, and there were many nights when I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning just to get something to fit within the page exactly the way I wanted it. Marsha and I went through a few rounds, but we ended up with a book we are both very proud of.This experience spurred me on to make connections with children’s illustrators and promoters and my company Select-O-Grafix, LLC is primed and ready to launch into the world of formatting children’s books. I can’t wait to do more and give children that wonderful experience of an enjoyable fun read.
