Author Richard McEwan Will Guest on The Writing Mama Show

Blog Talk Radio’s Featured World of Ink Network show The Writing Mama, with host Virginia S Grenier, has guest author Richard McEwan joining the show to talk his debute children's picture book, "The Adventures of Sir Buddy and Mr. Pupples: The Rescue"

The Writing Mama show will air live, Monday November 17, 2014 at 4pm Eastern.
You can listen/call in at (714) 242-5259. (Note: if you can’t make the show, you can listen on demand at the same link.)

About the Author: Richard McEwan retired to the Outer Banks of North Carolina after a long career in sales, marketing and advertising. He lives with his wife, Christie, and their two dogs, Buddy and River, one cat named Oyster and many photos of foster dogs. He was inspired to begin writing because of his grandchildren's love of books.

About the Book: This is an engaging story for children to read or have read to them about a lost puppy. Hopefully, it will encourage young ones to think about the story when they come upon a stray dog or cat; and seek the guidance of an adult in helping to find it's family...or new home.

SugarPaw is back for another adventure and a bit more mischief - Pledge your suppot Today!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1440757101/whistle-beans-another-sugarpaw-adventure
Whistle Beans is the second book in the SugarPaw Adventure series from Award-winning Author VS Grenier. The first book, Babysitting SugarPaw is a Silver Mom's Choice and 2011 Silver Quill Award-winner.

The artwork found inside the series is done by Illustrator and Animator Kevin Scott Collier.

BEHIND THE STORY -
The concepts for the books in the SugarPaw Adventure series are from Author VS Grenier's personal life.
When Grenier was little, she couldn't whistle. A family friend, Charlie Baker, was one of the best whistlers and she wanted to have a strong whistle like his. Grenier practiced everyday...but never got much out beyond the WHOOSHING sound of air passing her lips.

It was the holidays when Charlie shared his secret to a strong whistle with her over a big Christmas Dinner at her family's house. A memory VS Grenier cherishes to this day!

SugarPaw will share this secret with young readers all over the world in his second children's book adventure, which is also dedicated to the loving memory of Charlie Baker!

 The KickStart Campaign

The KickStarter campaign is to raise the funds to get the book printed. It ends in 30 days! If we fall short of our goal, we don't get any of the funding & have to start over.

If you haven't had a chance to check it out our KickStarter page, please do! Besides offering the books, we also have some fun stuff starting with $10 pledges!

Book Review: Quincy and the Buck by Camille Matthews; Illustrated by Michelle Black

Fears, we all have them it’s how we handle them and learn to overcome these fears that make us strong. People are not the only ones that fall prey to their own fears, bullies and wild animals that scare us. Animals sense danger and might shy away from snakes, alligators or coyotes or even deer. Meet Quincy as beautiful red horse whose coat is the color of a shiny new penny and whose mane and tail were long and shiny. Quincy was a special horse that belonged to Cam who loved riding him. His home was a small barn near a magnificent desert. Just like people have best friends so does Quincy. Quincy’s best horse pal is Beau. Their stalls were next to each other and they were able to share their thoughts with each other. Living near an apple orchard with three apple trees illustrated in the book you can practically smell the apples and yearn for a taste.

Trail riding is something that Quincy never did and hoped to learn really soon. But, he was fearful of what he might find when leaving the comforts of his farm. Next to the barn was a great place for trail riding but although he dreamed and imagined himself on a long dusty trail in the desert, hoping to feel the crunch of sand under his hooves, and the wind blowing on his mane, he was afraid. He thought long and hard about what could go wrong and what might happen when he left the safety of his corral. What would he do if he encountered a deer or even a cougar?

Friends confide in each other and Quincy confided in Beau. Beau is a really great friend and explained to him that he needed to go out and face the surprises or he will never become brave. Staying home would not make him brave and wild animals are often just as afraid of you as you are of them. So, go out and follow a more experienced horse and he should be fine.

Just like a small child or even a teen he asked himself what else could happen if he went out in the desert or even someone going away to school for the first time or taking riding lessons. Quincy had little time to ask more questions when Cam put Beau’s saddle on him and the next thing he knew he and Cathy’s with her horse Buck were on their way to a trail ride.

Quincy is a great horse and even though he was afraid he managed to follow Buck and imitate his movements. But, Buck was mean and when he realized what he was doing you have to see the look he gave him. Well you can when you go to the page opposite the word BULLY and see just what he did to make Quincy even more afraid. But, Cathy would not stand for it and Quincy learned a new word: Bully. Now, he would learn the meaning.

Enter the trail, see the Mushroom People, check out their faces and see how the tower over the desert and then watch Quincy try to walk on rocks trying not to trip or fall. Quincy really wanted to be friends with Buck but Buck would not have it and what he does will let young readers know just what happens when someone wants to be mean and is a real Bully.

Watch what Cathy does and how she tries to teach Buck a lesson and then find out what Cam does when Quincy’s bridle breaks. The magnificent illustrations tell the story in their own way for young readers that cannot read. Cathy made sure that the two horses stayed away from each other but Quincy just wanted to be friends. Friendships are special and Beau and Quincy prove to young readers that friends can help you understand your fears and overcome them. Quincy is anxious to get back out on the trail with Cam: Let’s hope she writes another adventure for him and maybe next time Buck will come along as his friend.

Book Review: Gluten Free Me - Beckmin Goes to School

Title of Book: Gluten-Free Me, Beckmin Goes to School

Author: Christy E. Bykowski
Publisher: Halo Publishing, Int.
ISBN Number: ISBN 13: 978-1-61244-228-0
Genre: Children
Publication Date: January 2014

Synopsis of book: “Beckmin goes to School” is meant to raise awareness for celiac disease and the everyday challenges children with celiac disease face in their otherwise normal activities.  As diagnosis of celiac disease increases, education, awareness, and understanding will be the keys to making celiac kids feel normal and included. Written for children to help them express and understand celiac disease, the book is a wonderful tool for children and adults alike.

Our thoughts: This is a great book for families with celiac kids. Beckmin helps these young children understand they are not different from others, they just have an allergy they need to make others aware of. As Beckmin goes throughout his day, he learns how to make friends, turn situations of bullying into a learning experiences for those around him and doesn't let his allergy stop him from enjoying all the wonderful things kids do in school.

We found this book to be very well written. The illustrations are a perfect fit and add to the positive themes throughout the book.

Interview with author Christy E. Bykowski

Christy E. Bykowski is an award-winning public relations and marketing practitioner, as well as a wife and mother. She lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio, with her husband, Benjamin, raising their three boys and spreading awareness about celiac disease and the need for a gluten-free environment for individuals diagnosed with celiac disease.

What are some of the things that have influenced/inspired your writing?

I was inspired by my son, Beckmin, who was diagnosed with celiac disease at age 1.5.  Watching him grow up – how he’s had to explain his disease to other kids and parents; how he’s to make very adult decisions all day, every day – led me to write this book.  I’m hoping it’s a tool that will help him, and others, easy explain what celiac disease is and how someone with it has to cope.

Can you share some writing experiences with us?

Most of my writing is done in my PJs, at my computer with a cup of coffee – before the kids wake up.  While I enjoy writing all kinds of things, this is the first piece I’ve taken all the way through publication.

Tell us briefly about your recently published book and what you feel is the most important topic/sub-message you share.

“Beckmin goes to School” is meant to raise awareness for celiac disease and the everyday challenges children with celiac disease face in their otherwise normal activities.  As diagnosis of celiac disease increases, education, awareness, and understanding will be the keys to making celiac kids feel normal and included.  This book is written for children to help them express and understand celiac disease.  Beckmin’s stories, written to help children define, understand, and explain celiac disease, are meant to be both empowering and educational for kids and their parents.

Like all authors, you have had your fair share of rejection letters. You obviously did not let the letters deter you. How did you keep your determination without getting discouraged?

I decided to self publish, so I could work under my own schedule, with personal deadlines, so I went through Halo Publishing International.  The process was surprisingly easy, and I’ve been very happy with the relationship.  I’m grateful for all the direction and resources they provided.

Please describe to us your relationship between you and your editor. What makes an author/editor relationship a success?

I think the key to an author/editor relationship really lies in the ability to accept and give feedback.  I had to be open to the edits and suggestions she made for me.

Tell us about your writing space.

As a full-time working Mom of three boys under the age of 5, there is no typical writing day.  I work in personal/writing time when and where I can. That said, I enjoy the solitude of writing.  I need quiet space to write and think, and find peacefulness in getting my thoughts down on paper. I wrote this book early in the morning, before the kids were awake.

Is there anything you'd go back and do differently now that you have been published, in regards to your writing career?

I enjoyed the book process so much, I want to write more!

Do you do first drafts on a computer or by hand?

I do all my writing at my computer.  Thank goodness for spell check!

How do you see the future of book publishing, both traditional, electronic and print on demand?

I self published through an online book publisher and the process was easy and affordable.  I can see it really going in this direction.  I had a terrific experience.

What advice would you give to a new writer?

Don’t give up!  Your children’s book will be a wonderful legacy for you and your child.

Do you have any book signings, tours or special events planned to promote your book that readers might be interested in attending? If so, when and where?
The World of Ink Network will be touring my kid friendly celiac disease awareness picture book, Gluten-Free Me: Beckmin Goes to School January 2014. You can find out more at http://tinyurl.com/lquajjn
