Never Say Never

Monday, March 21, 2016

NEVER SAY NEVER

I remember thinking that I was never going to write a short story because I didn’t really like short stories, but as we all know sometimes never doesn’t really mean never, at least not for me.

I challenged myself to see if I could write a short sexy story which I did, EVERY MAN WANTS HER, taken from a screenplay I had written years ago. The surprise for me was readers loved my character Virginia Templeton, and I actually became quite fond of her. I liked her because she did whatever she wanted and I found myself becoming a much more confident writer and person. For those of you who have read my stories I know you will understand what I mean. Virginia was everything I wasn’t but that isn’t true anymore.

Then, taking another plunge, I wrote a second short story also about Virginia Templeton, IT’S NEVER ENOUGH, and then another, STEPPING UP HER GAME.

By this time I began to really understand Virginia Templeton and wrote a blog for her, made a Pinterest board about her as well as a Facebook page. I was having such a great time I decided to put all three stories together. The book was called, THE VIRGINIA TEMPLETON STORIES.

Shortly after all three stories were done I began to think I made a mistake. I didn’t realize readers wouldn’t be happy when they finished the stories because they thought the book was a novel.
However, what shocked me most of all was they weren’t satisfied with the ending because I assumed each story had a beginning, middle and end, which they did. That’s when I realized that was a good thing. They liked my character and wanted more.

Why I didn’t realize that was because as some writers do I doubted my own ability and was certain they had enough of Virginia Templeton. It was because of a short review of my stories that a very honest reader wrote I began to turn this all around and understand what had happened.

By now you’re probably wondering why I posted this. I wanted to explain to writers that sometimes we are too tough on ourselves. Write the best story you can and you will find your audience. If you’re lucky enough to have readers wanting more you have done your job, just finish what you start.

Virginia Templeton will be back and I want to thank all the readers that wanted to know more about Virginia for convincing me to bring her back, as well as some of the other characters in the stories. The most fascinating part of this journey for me was that I probably won’t say I’ll never do something because I damn well know that might not be true for me or my characters.

JKS Author -

Indie Success

Brannan
Debuting as an indie author is the most uphill battle a writer could climb. Sandra Brannan has made it to the top of the mountain. JKS worked to get the first book of her Liv Bergen Murder Mystery Series into the hands of booksellers across the country, resulting in the highly-prized Indie Next Pick nomination, a strong endorsement by independent bookstores across the United States, that gives an author the type of buzz in the book industry needed to create legitimacy., Sandra personally visited some of these stores and many more for personal appearances and book signing events. She was the first author be featured in a video in all of the New York City taxicabs the week of Book Expo of America.

Our team now has to turn down requests for Sandra to do media and appearances because she only has so much time in a day!

To date, we’ve now worked with Sandra to launch five novels in this series.

Romance is great especially if the author is Leigh Michaels

LINK TO THE SHOW - May 5 - 9 PM EST 8 PM CST
Today we have with us the talented author of nearly 100 books, including 80 contemporary novels and more than a dozen non-fiction books. More than 35 million copies of her romance novels have been published by Harlequin. A 6 time RITA finalist, she has also received two Reviewer’s Choice awards from RT Book Reviews, and was the 2003 recipient of the Johnson Brigham Award. She is the author of On Writing Romance, published in January 2007 by Writers Digest Books. Leigh also teaches romance writing on the Internet at Gotham Writers’ Workshop. She lives in Ottumwa, Iowa, where she is working on her third book from Sourcebooks, The Wedding Affair, which will be in stores in September. Her first book with Sourcebooks Inc. Publishing House sold to rave reviews, The Mistress’ House and is followed by Just One Season in London.
Let’s get right in to the questions about your newest book. Just One Season in London was just released. Can you tell us what scene in the book is your favorite?
LM: One of my favorites is near the end of the story when Sophie hijacks her brother’s horse, tears her dress so she can ride astride, and takes off across the park in pursuit of the man who she simply can’t let get away. I loved writing that scene, largely because it parallels an earlier scene where they even say some of the same things to each other. And because Sophie is something of a renegade – she’s young enough not to think about the consequences.
I have to say, the novel was wonderfully written to add some suspense to the final pairing up of the characters. I wasn’t sure who was getting a HEA or who they were getting it with. How did you come up with the plot for Just One Season in London?
LM: I started writing with the basic idea of a mother, son, and daughter who are all trying to marry money – not to make life easier for themselves, but to take care of the other two. It’s the element of sacrifice which made this story so satisfying for me. I knew pretty much how Miranda’s story would end – though some of the details surprised me – and I was fairly certain of Rye’s happy ending. But I didn’t know who Sophie would end up with until I was about halfway through writing the book.
How much research did you have to undertake to make this historical romance novel?
LM: I think I’ve been researching the Regency period forever, first by reading novels set in the Regency period and then by absorbing all the non-fiction resources I could find. I usually have a reference book nearby and in odd moments I open it at random just to refresh my memory, because a writer never knows what detail she’ll want to use. Among the specific materials I obtained for this book was an illustrated guide to London at that time, so I could see what Grosvenor Square actually looked like. Also period maps, to visualize how different sites related to each other geographically and what the characters would see as they looked out windows or rode in carriages.
Tell us about your process of writing Just One Season in London, any outlines or plans?
LM: This book includes 66 separate scenes and four distinct points of view – so to keep each of the individual stories flowing, I kept a list of the scenes. For each scene I had a short tag line which included the POV character’s name, so I could glance at the list and know exactly how long it had been since I had used a particular point of view or advanced that specific romance.
If Just One Season in London gained a movie deal, which actors would you cast in the character roles?
LM: I’m absolutely terrible at the game of choosing actors – would any of your readers like to make suggestions? – but I would like to see Maggie Smith as Lady Stone. She could play both the cynical and romantic sides of that character with panache.
Your next book The Wedding Affair is coming out in September of this year, can you tell us about it?
LM: The Duke of Somervale’s sister is getting married at his country estate, and half of England is invited. But most of the guests have other things – not the wedding – on their minds. Wife-of-convenience Penelope Townsend is hoping to use the trip to the duke’s estate to seduce her husband into a real marriage… Vicar’s daughter Kate Blakely is desperate for a job that will let her escape the village… and poverty-stricken widow Olivia Reyne will stop at nothing to secure her daughter’s future, even if that means pretending to adore the duke – while the duke himself is dodging the covey of bridesmaids who are stalking him.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
LM: I’ve been a writer since I was very small – there is some perfectly dreadful poetry in my baby book. My degree is in journalism, because I wanted to make my living as a writer. Fortunately for me, I was able to do that by writing fiction instead.
What do you think makes a good story?
LM: To draw me in, a good read has to have interesting characters – people I would like to be friends with – facing intriguing problems with style and grace and humor.
Do you draw inspiration from reading other books, from family, or other sources?
LM: I’ve built entire books on a random comment someone made to me over lunch. I’ve used incidents that have happened to my friends (though, luckily for my friends, the incidents are usually much worse in the book than in real life). The most useful single source for me is newspapers, where there are stories about people facing odd or unusual problems. That serves as a takeoff point to ask, “What if this happened next?” or “What if he did this instead of that?”
What have you discovered is the most challenging part of writing?
LM: Actually putting the rear in the chair day after day and producing pages, when I sometimes don’t feel like it, or when the story feels as if it’s not going anywhere. Writing a book is a BIG project, and at the beginning it feels as if it will never be done no matter how many hours I sit there, so taking a walk is a much more inviting alternative.
What tools do you feel are must-haves for writers?
LM: Other than a wastebasket (or the electronic equivalent), not much. I often use Dr. Wicked’s Write or Die website (www.writeordie.com) when I’m writing a first draft, because facing consequences keeps me writing instead of second-guessing and editing and picking at flaws. That gets a lot of words on paper in a hurry, and then I can edit and polish and make them good.
Finish this sentence, Writing is like…
LM: Writing a book is like moving a train. Starting up from a dead stop and pulling out of the station takes a huge amount of energy, but it’s exciting to begin a new journey (or a new book). Then once the train is rolling and up to speed, the momentum carries it along and it’s actually hard to stop until you reach your destination – and write The End.
And last but not least, is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or the books you write?
LM: I love writing triple stories – three heroes, three heroines, three romances melded into one book. And I’d love to hear what readers think of that approach!

Virginia Templeton Tells All!

Take your pick - they all know how to do it!

I wanted to make sure you get the story right so I’m telling it.  When I tell a story it’s one hundred percent truthful unless I feel like lying. I went to a Psychiatrist for years; actually it wasn’t just one it was more like ten. Most of them let me go after a few weeks and told me to come back when I was ready to commit to helping myself. That day never did come but there was one of them who actually meant something to me. It didn’t last but maybe it could have.
I think he was falling for me or something like that. He sent me packing and I decided the only way I was going to see a Psychiatrist was in bed, and it did happen. It wasn’t in bed it was actually on the floor but he was damn sexy and that would be Nicholas Waters. It could have gone further but somehow life got in the way and possibly my bad behavior and the fact that he was married complicated the whole damn situation.
Before I go any further I should add that during my time in therapy I was also married, but that never stopped me from taking advantage of a sexy man. So goes the saga of Virginia Templeton, that’s me.
There are a few other other things I should let you in on that are one hundred and ten percent truthful. You will have to decide later if you believe me or not. That’s the fun of life; it’s a journey of surprises.
I should tell you that after an incredible sexual evening with my husband Slater, a rich Chicago billionaire, who I wasn’t in love with, died. I wasn’t exactly devastated and actually I was quite happy to finally be able to do whatever I wanted, not that I didn’t. I did, but shall we say the public didn’t need the sordid details of my continuing affairs with some of the most influential men in Chicago. I did have fun.
There’s always something magical about secrets.  I love keeping secrets. That is exactly how I met Slater Templeton. I was a high class party girl but no one knew it. There were many guys in my repertoire who knew each other but that was my secret. This high class party girl went to college with the money she made from fucking men who didn’t get enough at home and had a great deal of money. They pissed away money like you wouldn’t believe.
There was one other special man who shall remain nameless for now who hired me just to have someone to talk to. When our visits were over he made a deal with me that if I stopped all my irresponsible  behavior he would pay my tuition for school and any back loans I had acquired. I agreed and that was that.
I did end up marrying Slater who seemed to be fine with my reckless but exciting history. I assumed that was because he wasn’t pristine either.  We had one common element in our relationship that brought us together and that was both of us could tell a lie with a straight face and no one was the wiser.
After he died and the will was read there a lot of surprises but right now that doesn’t matter because a short while after his so called death I found out the incredibly insane truth. He had planned his death and was in Argentina collecting money from a fund he had set up for himself with the help of the company’s senior corporate controller, Sean Warner.
Now this guy was a piece of work. He needed money to pay off his debts but right now he’s sitting in jail and that is just fine with me. He’s a son of a bitch and as far as I’m concerned he can rot in hell and he just might do that. He couldn’t afford a good lawyer and I did spread the word around that he was poison so no one helped him. What a shame.
Well, back to Slater and my life with him. Yes, he was an asshole and that is what I get for wanting to marry a rich high profile guy. When I found out he faked his death I was so fucking mad if he would have been standing in front of me I would have killed him. I still might! That’s all you have to know for now, but you can read the collection of The Virginia Templeton Stories to find out exactly how I got to this moment.
