Each month the Families Matter Show will cover topics on the importance of family to empowering our children.

This months topic: Alone Together: How Technology has Separated Us from Each Other
We are all over-connected through cell phones and other technological gadgets. Even when we are together as a family with our children, we seem to be texting and playing video games. We are multi-tasking masters. But it is at the peril of teaching our children the true art of communication. Kids are having a harder and harder time to really connect with each other, be they friends, siblings or parents. We as parents should find ways to show kids the importance of empathic connection.  We could this in the following ways:

• Having unplugged times when we could related to one another personally and face to face;
• Having times when we are doing things as a family as opposed to watching television all the time;
• Going out for walks as a family;
• Doing family activities;
• Just hanging out as a family;
• Having a sit down meal at least a few times a week.

By taking these steps we could saving our children the hardship of not being to effectively communicate when they get older. We need to be parents who are not alone together but openly and empathically together.

Book Review of SpecialT: Nine Lives - Nine Names

About the Book: Cats teach us some of life's most important lessons. After all, nine lives allow them time to get things right.

God, in His infinite wisdom and I imagine a chuckle or two, often uses one of His marvelous creatures get our attention. I'm convinced that SpecialT, an older, gentle, tabby cat, was divinely led to my home and into my heart because some of the principles I had previously learned about family, friendship, and God's faithfulness needed reinforcing.

Our Thoughts: We have read many different memoirs, but this one is so unique. Not only because it is about a cat, but also how this one cat showed his family and those touched with his feliane ways that life is to be explored, enjoyed and shared with all around you. Boyer's story tugs at your heart. You don't need to be an animal lover to enjoy this book, but it is the perfect gift for those who are.

Boyer traces the story from when she first saw SpecialT appear on her doorstep and how she knew that this older cat would be the pet who would grace her life always. And SpecialT did grace her life for many years to come. His story reveals how delightful life can end up being if we can find the path God wants for us, take it, persevere, and not look back.

We could relate to how Boyer felt when SpecialT passed away. Boyer's written goodbye to this cat will surely pull at your heartstrings. One of our reviewers sons also had a beloved cat for many years. She said, "It took a long time to stop weeping and grieving. Even now as a young man he still gets tears in his eyes when he sees a picture of his childhood furry friend."

There is no doubt in my mind that he polished his life-lessons on his way to me.
Many cats share one or more of SpecialT's qualities, and are no doubt life-lesson teachers to some degree. Whether you read his story on a sunny beach, in front of a fireplace with a cup of tea, out loud to your children or grandchildren, or quietly to yourself, it is my hope that one of your favorite cats, past or present, will come to mind and put a smile on your face as you remember a life-lesson he or she taught to you.

WOI Guest Post: The Joy of Writing While Blind by Traci McDonald

One of the most common questions I am asked when people find out I am a completely blind author, “Isn’t that so hard to do when you can’t see what you’re writing?”

The truth is; its not that hard. I have a computer that talks to me, voice recorders, digital players and even a voice activated cell phone. Being a blind author is not difficult if all I have to deal with is being blind. The more difficult parts of being an author are not even sight related.

Like most authors, I love to write and it fills my life with joy and meaning. I write for and with my kids. I write for family and friends, and I write because I love to build beautiful things with words. When I write, my computer announces the stroke of each key and the content of each document. It is such a thrill for me to write something and feel the immediate gratification of hearing it read back to me. When the sound of the prose and the picture in my head match, I know I am on the right track. Every author needs beta readers or readers outside of themselves. As a direct result of writing blind I get to hear my computer fill this role for me, instantly.

I also enjoy the experience of having visual memories, while being able to use my other senses to create images that are more vibrant. Can you imagine which color feels like a warm loaf of bread, a waterfall that roars like a dragon’s snore or the smell of pine, alfalfa, and moss that means green? Colors and pictures fill my world when I can use words to paint them.

Writing is not the easiest task to accomplish when you can’t read your own work. However, it is a joy for me to figure out how to do it. The sense of accomplishment and purpose is a great source of joy and contentment in my life.

I have a blog called Writing Blind that tells the story of not only my writing but my journey through life as a blind person. It has been a lot of fun for me to talk about writing and sharing funny stories with readers. You can also find information about my novel Killing Casanova on my blog as well. About the Author: 

Debut author Traci McDonald has been a writer since she figured out how to make words on a page. Traci wrote for English classes like most people, but she wrote everything else in between. Traci won minor competitions with short stories, poetry and lyrics before becoming visually impaired. That is just a political correct way of saying Traci McDonald is blind. Traci lost her eyesight 17 years ago, but it never stopped her from living life and following her dreams. She has struggled with her health and raising kids, prior to the publication of her first novel. Traci is very excited to see her dream in life coming true. She lives in a small cozy town in the Mojave Desert, less than 150 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada.
